I really do love Adobe. I have been using Photoshop since version 5. Having to play the part of photographer, designer and tech writer — sometimes simultaneously — I use some part of their massive Creative Suite 3 on a daily basis… sometimes I have 7 or more Adobe programs open at once.
That’s why I am going to blame this one on Microsoft.
Ever since I installed Windows Vista, things have been going awry. Here are my top seven eight gripes with Vista stability, and the main reasons why I am finally giving up on it as my main operating system:
- Not only do several Adobe CS3 programs not function, but even Microsoft Office 2007 comes to a halt or crashes on too many occasions. MICROSOFT office. MICROSOFT. Please, if anything, for heaven’s sake at least make your OWN PROGRAMS WORK with your latest operating system.
- With the advent of Vista, I can now have 3 Adobe programs open at once. For several minutes before crashing. XP managed memory well enough where I could run half a dozen, memory hogging adobe applications at once for days on end.
- All of a sudden Windows has forgotten that I have put in a registration code and authorized my copy of CS3, Lightroom or some other program. Or perhaps it is a security “feature”, yes, it must be the coveted User Account Control (UAC), thinking I am a bad guy and locking down the software for me. How quaint.
- I’ve seen Microsoft install automatic updates before, and forcing a restart without your permission. I’m over that. But now Adobe Flash installs an update and Windows takes the opportunity to shut down all of my programs without saving anything and restart my computer. For a FLASH PLUGIN!? C’mon Billy boy! What the hell is up with that?
- Every time I try to watch a flash video, Internet Explorer decides it needs to install Flash again. And then restart my computer. Nice. Firefox seems to work fine.
- Explorer hops on the tabbed browser bandwagon with Firefox. Great! Unfortunately it gets upset when I open more than a few tabs and all of the integrated explorer functions (all windows, programs, and any right-click functions) freak out at me and disappear. Until I close a tab or program that is. Again, here Firefox does not have the same disability.
- It takes up to several minutes to display a damned list of files in a folder. Windows, I could care less if you are taking this time to carefully “index” all of the files before showing them to me. You know why? Because I’m ALREADY LOOKING AT THE FOLDER. I know where the damned files are, I’m sitting here trying to look at them. STOP INDEXING MY WHOLE LIFE FOR ME. Just show me the friggin’ files! ROAAAAAARRRRR! My Viking rage is coming out… and I don’t even think I’m a viking!
- Vista. I hate you. I really really hate you. I’m officially going to Fry’s Electronics today to BUY a copy of XP. Because you (and Dell) forced me down this tumultuous path and now won’t let me downgrade from Vista Home Premium. Yes. I am going to waste a day re-imaging my computer because if I don’t, I’ll waste even more time (and hair) trying to cope with you.
Consider this blog entry your divorce papers Vista.
